The Aquaculture Development Association of Zambia has welcomed the extended period for the annual fish ban from February 28 to May 31, 2021.
Speaking in an interview the Association Chairperson Fisho Mwale said the move by the ministry to extend the fish ban is good for the long term benefit of the sector.
Mr Mwale said we are living in an unusual time in which climate change is disturbing the bleeding seasons and circles of our natural fish thus leading the ministry to come up with the decision of an extension.
The Association Chairman also said the consequence of over fishing and poor management of our natural fish resources has contributed to the deprecation of the fish hence leading to the need for an extension of the ban.
Mr Mwale said even though the ban impacts the livelihood of the stakeholders in the fishing sector, it is better to maintain the fish stock.
Government initially imposed the annual fish ban for three months from December 1, 2020 to February 28 but the ban has been extended for another three months to May 31, 2021.
