Former boxing star Kennedy Kanyanta has paid tribute to the late boxing icon Anthony ‘Preacher-man’ Mwamba who has died at the age of 61.
Mwamba, a retired boxer, was also a coach and director at Exodus Boxing Promotion.
Mwamba died on Thursday morning at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in Lusaka after an illness.
He is famous for grooming iconic female boxer Esther Phiri.
Kanyanta has described Mwamba as a person who loved boxing more than his life.
“I woke up to very sad news today. I heard the news but thought I was dreaming,” said Kanyanta, the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner.
“Indeed death has a poisonous sting. It has stung the most vigilant pioneer of our sport,” he said.
“I can only describe him as a man that loved boxing more than his life. I will live to remember him,” Kanyanta concluded.
During his hey days as a boxer, Mwamba competed in the men’s light welterweight event at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
He also won a bronze medal in the welterweight division at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
