Two persons have been shot dead in Lusaka during commotion that ensued when a crowd of cadres escorted opposition UPND- leader Hakainde Hichileme to the police service headquarters, where he was summoned for an interview.
And Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja said his officers have instituted investigations to establish the circumstances in which the two victims were shot.
Mr Kanganja said Police are yet to establish the circumstances under which the two persons were shot dead.
The shooting incident happened as police were trying to disperse a crowd that had escorted Mr Hichilema to police service headquarters.
Mr Kanganja said the crowd had gathered on independence avenue, High Court and other notable areas that included the Civic Center.
He said Police will wait for forensic examinations to ascertain what type of firearm was used and the public will be informed on the findings and way forward.
Mr Kanganja said police officers will remain on the ground to monitor the security situation.
The Police Inspector General has appealed to the public to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands.
