Vandals have looted the sewer network pipe for Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company valued at K100, 000.
This came to light yesterday when Mulonga Water Managing Director Reuben Kaira took Chingola Mayor Titus Tembo on a spot check.
Mr Kaira said 60 metres by 16 inches (60mx16″) of steel sewer pipes were stolen by thieves.
He said as a result of vandalism of five pipes with the length of 60m, the company cannot pump sewer effluent to the ponds for treatment.
He said 1×16″ costs K20, 000 bringing the value to K1.2 million.
Mr Kaira with his team also took the Mayor to the garage being built by Douglas Chilembi the former Boxer on top of Mulonga Water sewer network.
And in response Mr Tembo blamed Mulonga Water management for complacency in implementing the Act.
He said the current Act provides for utilities companies and Zambia Railways with authority to get a court injunction demanding for demolition of any structure built on its network.
Mr Tembo said nobody should intimidate Mulonga Water staff by hiding in the name of the ruling Patriotic Front while doing illegal things.
He said the procedure is simply take the matter to court demanding for demolition of an infrastructure on its network.
The Mayor said it was unthinkable for 60mx16″ pipes being looted within short space of time.
He advised Mulonga Water to dangle a carrot to the community that whoever reports theft of its network leading to successful prosecution will be compensated.
Efforts to speak to Mr Chilembi yielded no results as his phone went unanswered
