Germany has committed 10.8 million Euros for water security and sanitation services to Choma and Livingstone in Southern Province.
Germany Ambassador to Zambia, Anne Wagner – Mitchell has announced this when she called on Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister, Jonas Chanda at his office today.
Ambassador Anne Wagner – Mitchell says the support will go a long way in mitigating effects of climate change in the two districts.
And Ambassador Anne Wagner said her Government has provided 8 million Euros in the framework of the COVID -19 response to secure access to safe and clean water and sanitation.
She said an additional 4 million Euros will be made available to strengthen the water and sanitation sector for any possible second wave of the coronavirus (COVID -19)
She has since commended the Zambian Government’s response in fighting the COVID – 19.
Meanwhile Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Jonas Chanda has commended the Germany Government for its support in various sectors including water and sanitation.
Dr Chanda said the support is greatly contributing to enhancement of human development and poverty reduction, in with the Vision 2030 and the Seventh National Development Plan.
The Minister notes that the country has made substantial progress in accelerating universal access to water supply and sanitation, as a result of the support from Cooperating Partners such as the Federal Republic of Germany.
He says 72 per cent of Zambia’s population has access to clean and safe water compared to 65 per cent in 2014, adding that 54 per cent of the population has access to adequate sanitation compared to 25 per cent in 2014.
