Government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity has given K300,000 to the clergy in Kitwe for community engagements in disaster risk reduction and the fight against Covid-19.
DMMU National Co-ordinator Chanda Kabwe said prevention of disasters and the fight against Covid-19 can be achieved once all stakeholders, including the church take an active role.
Mr Kabwe was speaking when he addressed pastors from various denominations under the umbrella of Kitwe Pastors Fellowship at Oasis of Love Ministries International.
He said the K300,000 will be disbursed in bunches of K50,000 monthly for a period of six months when the program will be reviewed.
Mr Kabwe said Government is partnering with the church because a lot of people from different sectors come for church gatherings.
He later handed over 2,000 x 25 KG bags of Mealie-meal to the pastors fellowship to distribute to their congregants as the church is also housing members hit negatively by the effects of both climate change and COVID-19.
Mr Kabwe said government will continue working with the church in fostering national development as well as providing a genuine service to it’s people.
He also handed over various Covid-19 prevention materials to be distributed to all churches in Kitwe.
And Kitwe Pastors Fellowship President Bishop Raddy Lewilla said the gesture by president Edgar Lungu is unprecedented and the church will do it’s part in the fight against Covid-19.
Dr Lewillla said the church in Kitwe will not disappoint but deliver to the expectations of government.
He said the church has been hit badly by the pandemic which has made it difficult for them to help the needy and conduct various community service activities.
