Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe says the new road in Mulenga Compound is a game changer.
Mr Kang’ombe said the new road in un planned settlement of Mulenga will rise the value of property in the area while providing accessibility.
He was speaking when he toured the works on the 1.5 Kilometer road that will run from Mulenga police post on the Ndola-Kitwe high way through Mulenga compound up to Changa Changa.
The works are expected to be completed in three months time.
The Mayor who is happy with the works done so far is optimistic that new road which is being done under the Zambia Townships Project will help filter traffic for motorists and also provide a good bridge for school going children who have challenges crossing the famous Mate mate stream bridge in the rain season.
“This project will sort out two things once it is completed. The road will provide accessibility to the residents of Kitwe and it will rise the quality of infrastructure in Mulenga compound. Through this project we are confident that a good bridge will be done to allow vehicles to cross as well as school going children.
“There is need to bring a good road network system even to people who live in unplanned settlements in the district more especially that most of these areas have been neglected in terms of good infrastructure, hence government made resources available through the Zambia township road project to construction a short cut route through Mulenga compound,” he said.
And Avic International Deputy Site Manager Wu Qi Liang said the works on the road will take three months to be completed.
Mr Liang said the road and the bridge on the mate mate stream will be done at the same time allocated for the works to be completed.
Meanwhile residents of Mulenga compound who spoke to this reporter have expressed happiness that Mulenga compound has finally been opened up for good things as seen by the new road.
Jack Sawila one of the resident in the area said the move by government to put a road in Mulenga is welcome as it will bring accessibility to the locals and those living in Kitwe.
He said the local people always had challenges crossing the stream with merchandise and were forced to use a long route which costed them heavily.
