By Staff Writer
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) says the support and commitment by the government toward environmental management is a critical part of all development initiatives and activities.

ZEMA Director General John Msimuko said in 2019, ZEMA made significant strides in strengthening its regulatory function through execution of several interventions.

Mr Msimuko said ZEMA concluded the development of draft Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Regulations which will bridge procedural gaps in the assessment, mitigation and management of environmental impact at levels beyond individual projects.

He also said that ZEMA concluded a study on air emissions in the transport sector which examined the efficiency and quality of fuels currently in use for light duty vehicles in the country.

“As part of its commitments to serve the public better and decentralise its operations, ZEMA expanded its geographical coverage and opened an office in Chipata district,” he said.

Mr Msimuko said this yeay ZEMA commits to providing leadership in environmental management in the country.

He said automation of environmental management processes and procedures has commenced to strengthen the Agency’s regulatory functions.

Mr Msimuko said these and other interventions will result in service excellence, operational efficiency and ultimately, improve environmental management in Zambia.
