Power Tools bus hits 2 cyclists to death

A Power Tools bus has bashed into three cyclists and two people died, while four others sustained injuries.

The accident happened a Power Tools bus lost control when it improperly overtook at a T-junction and the in the process hit into a Toyota Hilux that was making a right turn thereby going off the road and hit into three cyclists.

The two cyclists died on the way to the hospital.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said the driver of the bus lost control of the bus which then went off the right side of the road and hit into three cyclists who were cycling heading the opposite direction.

She said due to the impact, two of the three cyclists Albert Sikabanga 31 and Aspen Mweetwa 39 both of Simunyewu Village of Choma sustained multiple body injuries and died on arrival at Choma General Hospital.

Ms Katongo said the driver Clement Mukalanga sustained a deep cut on the upper left eye, while  the third cyclist Alvester Sikabanga 31 sustained painful right leg, two passengers from the bus sustained minor injuries.

She said the accident occurred in Choma on November 11, 2019 at around 16.00 hours on great north road at division Police headquarters junction, Choma.

“Involved was a motor vehicle Zhongtong bus Registration number BCA 4080 property of Power tools bus services, driven from North to South by Andrew Musa 52 of Ganaton east Kitwe. Also involved was another motor vehicle Toyota Hilux registration number ABX 1390 also driven from North to South by Clement Mukalanga 50, of Shampande Township in Choma also a police officer in Choma,” she said.

She said the bodies of the deceased persons are in the mortuary and all the victims are admitted to the hospital.

The driver of the bus has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
