4 drown on Lake Mweru

Four people among them, two girls have drowned on Lake Mweru in Nchelenge District after the canoe on which they were capsised.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said the canoe capsised due to strong wind and waves.

Ms Katongo said that the canoe which was coming from Isokwe Island with 12 people on board was heading to the main land at Bulaya village for business.

She said the incidence happened yesterday, November 7, 2019 at about 16:00 hours.

Ms Katongo identified the victims as  Mervis Kabungo 30, of Chikange Village,  Chief Kambwali , Nchelenge District with her daughter Bridget  Kabaso  aged four months , Susan  Mulenga  27, of Bulaya Village,  Chief Kambwali and her daughter Silvia Ngoi  aged 01year 8 months.

She said the two bodies of Susan Mulenga and her daughter Silvia Ngoi had so far been retrieved while a search for the remaining bodies is still on.

Other people on board survived after they were rescued by some fishermen.
