Konkola underground mine floods to due to power outage

Copper Mines Plc (KCM) experienced a power outage at its Konkola Mine situated in Chililabombwe on 4 November 2019 at around 15:20 hours, which impacted underground operations at Shaft No. 4. All other areas were unaffected and remained operational.

The power outage occurred at the 1.1b Konkola surface substation.

The incident immediately led to emergency protocols kicking in; the water-tight door was closed on one level and the flooding was restricted to only one section of the mine while normal dewatering activities continued in other areas.

There were no injuries or damage to property.

Operations have now been normalized as power has been fully restored and water pumped out. The Konkola team is in control of the situation.

The Company has commissioned a multidisciplinary team to undertake investigations to establish the cause of the outage on the surface substation.
