The Zambia Breweries LTD has donated 640 by 25kgs bags of mealie meal to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to be distributed to hunger stricken areas.
Speaking after receiving the donation in Lusaka, Minister in the Office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri said the humanitarian gesture by Zambia Breweries is commendable.
Ms Phiri said the donation will help in mitigating the food insecurity in some parts of the country.
She indicated that the assessment done by DMMU shows that about 2.3 million people are in need of relief food in Southern Province, Western Province, Central Province and parts of Eastern Province.
The minister indicated that she is impressed that the donation was done by employees of Zambia Breweries to help the people in needy.
Speaking at the same event, DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe sai that Zambian Breweries always come to the help of the people in need as they demonstrated by being the first corporate entity to donate to the victims of Cyclone Idai.
“His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has said we should reduce poverty in our country by creating jobs for our people. Zambia Breweries LTD is buying cassava from our farmers, this is a good thing for our farmers and is helping to reduce poverty levels,” he said.
He also assured Zambian Breweries that their investment in Zambia is protected.
Meanwhile Zambia Breweries LTD Country Director Jose Moran disclosed that the donation was contributed by the staff of the company and management topped up to reach 640 bags.
“This is a personal contribution from our employees. And management just topped up. This is a small assistance and this is not the first time we are making a donation,” he said.
He emphasized that the hunger situation in some parts of the country are caused by severe impact of climate change.
