Indeni Oil Refinery intends to double its production capacity to 2.2 million metric tonnes per year.
Indeni Managing Director David Lungu said currently, the refinery has a designed production capacity of 1.1 million metric tonnes per year.
Speaking after the BRICS Institute Executive Leadership Meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, Mr Lungu said the refinery only produces between 650,000 and 700,000 Metric Tonnes per year.
He said that the move to double the capacity of the refinery will sustain the future of the refinery.
Mr Lungu disclosed that the rehabilitation works of the refinery have reached an advanced stage.
He said the Refinery had put in place a five-year Strategic Plan from 2017 to 2021 to expand and rehabilitate the plant.
Mr Lungu said one of the first steps of the works will be to raise the capacity of the Refinery from the current 60 per cent of design capacity to the new one.
Mr Lungu has called for support from the private and public sector to further improve the plant.
He disclosed that Indeni has so far rehabilitated various units of its refinery.
Mr Lungu said the oil tanks have been worked on while new equipment has been installed.
He mentioned that by the year 2020 and 2021, the company will install a new crude oil tank and middle product tank that will improve efficiency.
