Solwezi District Commissioner Rosemary Kamalonga has called on business houses and other stakeholders in the district to help government by supporting community schools.
Ms Kamalonga expressed sadness that there are a lot of business houses operating in the district that are not ploughing back into the community.
She said government has created a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and the only way they can show appreciation is by giving back to communities where they operate.
Ms Kamalonga was speaking in Solwezi today, when she officiated at a Public Dialogue Forum organised by the Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS) to discuss the challenges faced by community schools and find solutions to address them.
She said government supports the concept of community schools because most of these exist in areas where there is no other alternative education facility.
The District Commissioner noted that vulnerable children in such communities deserve to learn and commended ZOCS for championing and supporting education in marginalised areas through embracing community schools and ensuring that vulnerable children have access to education.
She said despite enhanced interventions by government and ZOCS more still needs to be done to support the education of children in community schools.
