Chingola Bus drivers boycott

Today people woke up to a shock as Chingola bus drivers have parked vehicles demanding for a Kitwe station in town.

The bus stations are empty as all bus drivers have boycotted in the district.

Chingola District Bus Drivers Association secretary Rafael Mwansa told the Independent Observer that the council should bring Kitwe bus station in town.

He also said that they are against the council to take over the revenue that is collected in the station.

“That money that we leave in the station help in the station why does the council want to start collecting the money when they don’t do anything in the station,” he said.

He said the drivers last year made a request to the council but due to cholera they were told to wait.

“Last month the drivers had a meeting with the council because they were told that they made resolution every 6 months so they wanted to be included but it didn’t yield a positive response,” he said.

Mr Mwansa said that the buses pay to the council as required and bring the station in town will boost business for both the council and the drivers.

He said the council are saying that they have no place for a station in town but the drivers have a place where they can be located.

We want the Mayor to sit down and do something about our request because business is in town.

And Chingola Mayor Titus Tembo has said that Mwaiseni is the best place the buses can operate from.

Mr Tembo said town Center does not have enough space for buses to operate from and enough toilets for commuters using that facility.

He also said Kabundi road is going to be closed as it will be worked on so access to the same station will be very difficult.

“When Kabudi road is closed freedom avenue will be an alternative which even link Kitwe to mwaiseni.

“The issue of piracy we want to come up with a solution to combat it and we are working with the stake holders, bus/ taxi operators and the police any interested parties,” he said.
