Mopani Copper Mines has shut down its smelter to pave way for refurbishment which the mining firm says will last for six months.
Briefing the unions yesterday Mopani said the shutdown will affect the investments in the shafts.
And Mopani Public Relations Manager Nerbert Mulenga said the workers affected by the shutdown will be re-assigned or placed on paid leave.
Mr Mulenga said Mopani has already informed government and mine unions on the shutdown of the smelter plant.
He said Mopani will also continue to engage with its stakeholders throughout the refurbishment programme.
