Chililabombwe Council launches sustainable waste management pilot project

Chililabombwe Municipal Council has realigned its waste management system in order to enhance the waste management service through a pilot project.

The project focuses on effective waste collection at the point of generation as opposed to dumping.

CMC Assistant Public Relations Manager Chilufya Chungu said the project which is being piloted in four Wards namely Mukuka, Kamima, Hellen Kaunda and Yotamu Muleya is aimed at reducing illegal waste storage points.

Ms Chungu also said increasing community awareness on their role on effective waste management, and developing knowledge on preventive measures in reducing volume of waste and its management.

“Devising an appropriate waste management strategy that best suits community concerns, the pilot project will run for a period of six months after which it will be rolled out to the rest of the District based on the performance of the four Wards,” she said.

She said residents are paying between K10 to K20 per household, she has thanked residents for being cooperative and supporting Council’s efforts in providing the much needed services.
