GBS Bus carrying UCZ girls Brigade flips in Mpika killing two

A GBS Bus carrying 64 United Church of Zambia  (UCZ) girls brigade has flipped in Mpika killing two of the bus crew members in Mpika.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Rae Hamonga said the accident happened after the driver of the bus wanted to make a right turn but failed due to excessive speed.

Mr Hamoonga said Lewis Nkandu Mwewa 41, of Ndola with unknown number of passengers on board flipped inside Mpika Township at 16:20 hours along Great North Road.

“The accident involved a Scania Marcopolo bus Reg No. ABL 2285 property of GBS of Kitwe. Accident happened when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding and flipped when the driver wanted to make a right turn from Showgrounds area into Great North Road.

“The driver is on the run while his crew members namely: Shadrick Musongole 42 of Showgrounds, Mpika and Mathews Mumbi 32, of Chitulika compound, Mpika sustained multiple body injuries and were pronounced dead upon reaching Michael Chilufya Sata Hospital.

He said 20 passengers who are UCZ girls Brigade sustained slight injuries and have been attended to at the mentioned hospital.

The girls Brigade had a camp meeting at Mpika Boy school.

Mr Hamoonga said the bus had an extensively damaged front part and broken left side glasses.

Bodies are in Mpika Urban Clinic mortuary.
