Chingola thief commits suicide in police cells

A suspected Chingola thief has committed suicide inside police cells after the mattress she stole were recovered from her home.

Copperbelt Police Chief Charity Katanga has confirmed the arrested and subsequent committing suicide of Kalumbu Sakayaya.

Ms Katanga said Kalumbu 33, of 35 Kamalemba Road in Soweto Township had committed suicide by hanging herself using her Chitenge material.

She said Kalumbu who was alone in the female police cells tied the Chitenge material to the shower and her neck then committed suicide in sitting position.

“The incident happened yesterday February 22, 2019 between 07:00 hrs and 13: 05 hrs. She was alone in police cells detained for the theft of mattress a property of Moses Sinyali 33, of house no. 55 Butungwa Rd Soweto compound, chingola.

“The docket of entry and theft was opened and an arrest and recovery was made. The body is in Nchanga North General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem to determine the cause of death. Inquiry file was opened,” she said.
