3 border posts closed as DRC goes to polls

Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo has announced that government has received communication from the Congolese counterpart that starting from today the three borders in Congo will be closed as the country goes for elections.

Mr Kampyongo said members of the public are adviced that those planning to go or leave the DRC passing through the three border posts namely Kasumbalesa, mokabo and Sakanya must take notice.

Mr Kampyongo said his ministry and the provincial Minister Japhen Mwakalombe and regional immigration officers will be engaging the DRC counterparts so the people are informed of when borders will opened for business.

“We are informing the public in advance so that they prepare and plan especially those enroute to Congo. It’s unfortunate that there is nothing much we can do on our part,” he said.

He said members of the public will informed of any progress to avoid congestion of trucks laden with goods and to avoid smuggling of goods.

Mr Kampyongo revealed President Lungu has given a directive activate all security wings to work together adding that the ministry has intestified security survillance to look for early warnings and also ensure that those getting into the country are screened.

He urged the public to helpful with the security wings and report routes that are not know by the the security wings.
