Mansa Municipal Council (MMC) has embarked on major drainage clearance to prevent diarrhoea diseases.
And the local authority has called on Mansa residents to develop a habit participating in the cleaning exercise that happens every last Saturday of the month.
Mansa Municipal Council Public Relations Officer Gladys Saili said everyone in the district should uphold cleanliness at household and corporate levels.
Ms Saili said the upholding of cleanliness is a duty of every meaningful resident to maintain a clean environment in line with the ‘Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy’ campaign.
She said following a directive from Government issued on December 4, 2018 on the pre-emptive measures on cholera, the local authority is urging all to observe the measures which the council will ensure to enforce.
“We expect all residents and traders alike to avoid littering but dispose off waste in designated areas in the markets and for all to register for garbage collection with either the Council or the registered waste collection company,” she said.
She said with the onset of the rain season, (MMC) has intensified cleaning measures in the district in a bid to prevent any possible outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
Ms Saili said the council has engaged the Zambia Correctional Service to help with the shortage of man power who are clearing and unblocking drainages which will allow for the smooth flow of water whenever it rains.
“The local authority will be inspecting bars, markets, restaurants and other trading places to ensure that acceptable health trading standards are adhered to as stipulated in the Food and Drugs Act Cap 303 of the Laws of Zambia,” she said.
