Street Vending is Illegal- Mwakalombe

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
Copperbelt Minister Japhan Mwakalombe says street vending will not be condoned because it is illegal.

Mr Mwakalombe said street vending has negative vice the local Authority needs to curb.

He said looking back at last year’s cholera epidemic, the Minister observed that treating a disease is costly than preventing it.

“So we need to ensure that all businesses are conducted in conducive environment. Street vending is an illegality that cannot be condoned as government can’t put the lives of both the trader and an innocent citizen in danger.

“The Central Government, will support efforts of the Local Authorities to rid the streets off street vendors,” he said

The Minister was speaking when he spearheaded the cleaning exercise in Ndola where he called on the Local Authority to conduct an audit of all markets in the district to ascertain the availability of trading spaces.

During the cleaning up of Main Masala Market in response to ‘The Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign’ call by President Edgar Lungu.

The Minister has appealed to the corporate entities to come on board and assist in the collection of historical wastes and help ensure that Ndola and other Copperbelt towns remain disease free even as we enter the rain season.
