Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company says vandalism is retrogressive to the provision of clean water to communities.

Mulonga Water Public Relations Manager Deborah Kangende said vandalism is derailing the progress of implementation of the €156 million project.

Ms Kangende is saddened by the recent spate of arson incidents involving the burning of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) water pipes in Chikola Township of Chingola.

The incidents which occurred on April 3 and 4, 2018  where the said pipes were completely burnt with the aim of pilfering the steel (flanges) backing rings which are used to connect the pipes is disappointing and unacceptable.

“This sad development has derailed the company’s progress to implement the Euro 156 million Zambia Water and Sanitation Project and in this particular case will delay the improvement of water supply to Chikola, Chabanyama and Chiwempala.

“The company urges residents in Chikola in particular and all service areas in general to be alert and look out for criminal activities which have potential not only to derail projects but to negatively affect service provision. The loss in material alone cost more than K200, 000,” she said.

She said vandalism causes erratic supply, loss of supply and compromises services thereby affecting even the innocent ones.

Ms Kangende implored the community of Chingola to report any thefts or vandalism to the nearest police station or Mulonga Water offices.

“Vandalism is an offence under Water  Supply and Sanitation Act No. 28 of 1997  therefore the company together with Zambia Police will not hesitate to prosecute any person involved in stealing and vandalising the property of Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company,” she said.
