90 kg uncertified Meat seized in Mongu

Mongu Municipal Council in Western Province has seized 90kgs of uncertified meat from Mandanga area following the outbreak of Anthrax.

Mongu Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations manager Abigail Sitenge said the public health workers were acting on recent reports of Anthrax cases reported in Mongu and other parts of Western Province.

Ms Sitenge said that the exercise was meant to determine whether the meat sold to the general public is certified fit for human consumption and if it comes from safe sources.

She said the 90kgs of meat was sold under unsanitary conditions. The meat has since been disposed of by the Court.

“Pursuant to section 34 of the Public Health Act, Cap 295, Section 31(2) (b) of Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and section 13 of Statutory Instrument No. 12 of 2018, meat owners need to have a valid inspection receipt from the veterinary department,” she said.

She has since urged suppliers of meat and meat products to follow procedure and ensure that their meat is certified fit for human consumption.

Ms Sitenge added that the Council has since intensified meat inspections in order to ascertain compliance with provisions of Public Health regulations.

“We further appeal to members of the public to desist from buying meat from unauthorized butcheries to avoid being infected with Anthrax,” she said
