9 people escape with burns after Zesco transformer bursts

Nine people of Chongwe District have survived with burns after a Zesco Transformer burst into flames and the house there where in caught fire.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said police in Chongwe received a report via Phone from James Chilanga 40 of Koto village in Bundabunda Chiefdom in Chongwe, that a ZESCO transformer situated in Koto village developed a faulty and burst into flames.

Mr Hamoonga said a house which is situated a few meters away from the transformer caught fire and Nine victims comprising of five males and four females sustained burns.

He said this occurred on July 26, 2023 at 12: 00 hours in Koto village.

Mr Hamoonga said brief facts of the matter are that the victims Moses Banda 61, Layana Shakufwaya 38, Clever Chiyesa 30, Bright Mudenda 24, Modester Kankwala 22, and four female Juveniles two aged five, Six and Seven were watching television.

He said suddenly they heard a loud bang coming from a ZESCO transformer and the house in which the victims where caught fire through the sockets and sparks which burnt the victims.

Mr Hamoonga said that’s how the reporter informed the police and later the police informed Chongwe ZESCO and fire brigade who together rushed to the scene.

“The scene was visited and all the victims sustained mild leg burns except a female Juvenile aged five who sustained severe head burns and was referred to Levy Mwanawasa teaching hospital while the rest are admitted in Chongwe District hospital and their condition was said to be stable,” he said.
