9 More Bodies Recovered at Sensele mine, Bringing Total to 23

The bodies of nine more miners have been recovered from the tunnels at Sensele open pit mine in Chingola, bringing the total number of recovered bodies to 23.

The remains were retrieved from site one, the most challenging location, over the past five days. Despite the obstacles, rescuers successfully identified seven of the nine bodies and notified their families.

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo said a mass burial for the nine bodies is scheduled for tomorrow June, 8 2024, with the government covering all funeral expenses.

Mr Matambo said the search for the remaining trapped miners will continue until all are accounted for.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the families for their patience and thanked the president for his support.

The mine accident occurred in December 2023, after a heavy downpour trapped over 30 small-scale miners underground. The government remains hopeful that more bodies will be recovered from sites 2 and 3.
