8 hospitalised after consuming munkoyo

Eight members of the same family have been admitted to Kasamba Rural Health Centre after consuming local brewed drink popularly known as ‘Munkoyo’ in Kasamba area of Manyinga.

The victims are three adults who include two female and one male as well as five children of three girls and two boys respectively.

Resident Doctor, Joel Nkonde confirmed this in an interview with Zambia News and Information Services in Manyinga yesterday.

Dr Nkonde said according to the information collected from family members, it was alleged that the victims developed diarrhea after eating nshima with vegetables on Sunday evening.

He said after thorough examination of the victims it was established that the family members drunk contaminated locally brewed drink which caused severe diarrhea and stomach complications not the nshima with vegetables as earlier reported.

And one of the victims, Ever Kalenga, 32, also admitted to have taken the same drink after a meal then later developed diarrhea and stomach pains.

Dr Nkonde has however, confirmed that four of the eight victims have since been discharged and described the condition of the remaining four as stable.

He has since advised community members to ensure proper hygiene and ensure that all their food is covered and kept clean all the time/ZANIS.
