6 Police Officers injured by a mob in Luanshya

Six Police Offices from Luanshya have been injured after they were stoned by an agitated mob of over 500 people after a mysterious death of a resident.

The riotous mob was agitated by the death of Enock Kaoma 19, who died on December 2, 2022 between 16:00hours and 18:00hours after vomiting blood.

The residents suspected that the victim was bewitched by his grandmother who is currently nowhere to be seen.

Coppebelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said Mpatamatu Police station on December 6, 2022 at 13:10 hours at Kawama Township received a report in that some people in Kawama Township of Luanshya were conducting themselves in a riotous behavior.

Mr Mweemba said the Police rushed to the scene where burial was taking place and found a mob of over 500 people already conducting a traditional ritual commonly known as “Bwela Bwela”.

He said in the process of containing the situation six Officers were stoned and injured by the same riotous mob.

Mr Mweemba said with reinforcement from Luanshya Police station, Roan Police Station, Luanshya District Police, Division OPs and Kamfinsa Mobile Unit the situation was contained.

He said the body was later buried by the Police.

Mr Mweemba said the conditions of the injured officers are reported to be stable with minor injuries.

“Also a Police vehicle Toyota Land Cruiser ZP2025B was hit with a stone which has caused a shattered front wind screen. No one was apprehended but investigations have been instituted to identify culprits,” he said.
