Police in Lusaka have arrested and charged five suspects among them four (04) Burundese and one (01) Congolese in connection with the seized sugar suspected to be counterfeit product.
This was following an operation conducted by Police on 04th and 5th June, 2018 in Lusakas Zanimuone and City market.
The accused persons identified as female Claudin Uwambabazi36, male Habakubaho Bagonza aged 42, Tuyisenge Javier aged 24, Evaristo Ngeza aged 41 and Shombo Emile aged 23 have been charged with three counts.
Police Public Relation office Esther Katongo said their are charged with Forgery of Trademarks contrary to section 5 (1) (g) of the Merchandise Marks Act Chapter 405 of the laws of Zambia.
Sale of goods bearing false trade description contrary to section 6(1)(a) of the Merchandise Marks Act Chapter 405 of the Laws of Zambia.
Counterfeiting Trade Mark contrary to section 377 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 the Laws of Zambia.
Two suspects have been released on Police Bond while three are still detained in Police custody and will appear in court soon.
“We are reminding the general public that trading in counterfeit products is a crime and we are further warning all those found wanting that they will not be spared but prosecuted as such acts detrimental to the economy and have potential push genuine investors out of business” she said.
