The Zambia Police Service has arrested four suspects in connection with the theft of public infrastructure components, specifically solar batteries stolen from traffic lights along Independence Avenue in Lusaka.
The incident occurred between 01:00 hours and 05:00 hours on January 9, 2025.
Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said according to preliminary investigations, the suspects Simon Simutengu, 51, and two male juveniles aged 15 and 18, all from Chawama and Chibolya Township were found with two 12-volt Eastman tall tubular solar batteries suspected to have been stolen.
Mr Hamoonga said the batteries were removed from traffic lights opposite the Freedom Statue and are used to power the traffic light system.
He said further investigations revealed that the suspects had previously sold similar batteries to Abraham Phiri, 33, a resident of Chibolya Township, who has since been apprehended.
A manhunt has been launched for another individual suspected to have been the potential buyer of the stolen batteries.
The Zambia Police Service has warned that vandalism and theft of public infrastructure will not be tolerated, as such acts undermine public safety and well-being.
The police urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through their emergency toll-free line.
