4 drown in Luapula river

Four people among them two juveniles have drowned to death on Luapula River after the canoe on which they were in capsized.

The incident happened when the victims were crossing the river from Milenge to a fishing camp in Congo DRC.

It is suspected that the canoe capsized due to overloading. All the bodies have been retrieved.

Police Public Relations Officer Esther Katongo said the incident occurred on September 2, 2019 at about 16 00 hours.

Ms Katongo has identified the victims as Patricia Mandela 23, Mwansa Safeli 4, Mwape Safeli 3  and Maria Peter 25 all of Ndeni Village, Chief Sokontwe of Milenge District.

In another development, a two- year-old died after he was involved in a road traffic accident after he was hit by a Motor bike.

She said the accident happened when the rider of the motor bike lost control of the motor bike due to inexperience and went to hit the pedestrian who was off the road.

Ms Katongo has identified the victim as Ganizani Nyirenda of Msuzi area, of Lundazi District

The incident occurred on September 2, 2019 around 17 00 hours at Msuzi area near Msuzi Secondary School

She said the body is in Lundazi District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
