Four women have died in the Nyimba traffic accident, while 11 sustained serious injuries when a Fuso truck they riding in developed mechanical fault thereby rolling backwards.
In the same accident 16 people escaped with minor injuries.
The accident happened when Mackriel Mumba the driver of the Fuso Mitsubish truck Reg number ALZ 6962 was ascending a hill.
In the process the propeller shaft broke down thereby rolling backwards leading to the driver losing control and later overturned.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said Mr Mumba 37 of Tasala 5 Township in Petauke was carrying 38 passengers on board and 50x70kg bags of assorted goods.
Ms Katongo said accident which happened yesterday July 17, 2019 around 06:30 hours at Kasusu area 22 kilometres East of Nyimba on the Great East road.
“The passengers who died on the spot are Stellar other names not yet known of Tasala 10 Township of Petauke, another woman named Neria Mvula of Mpunga Township of Petauke, Janet Mwale 32 of Tasala 9 Petauke and Stella Kabijani 38 who died at the hospital.
“All the four bodies are in Nimba District hospital mortuary while the seriously injured are admitted to the same hospital. Sixteen other passengers sustained slight injuries and were treated as out patients. The driver and the other seven passengers escaped unhurt,” she said,
