The Department of Immigration in Lusaka has charged four Cambodians with unlawful stay and engaging in employment without a permit.
Immigrations Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka said they were among 18 persons apprehended on March 26, 2023 during a routine operation conducted at Crown Casino in Lusaka, Down Town.
Mr Nshinka said the other 14, all Chinese nationals, were released upon production of valid Immigration Permits.
He said the Cambodians will soon appear in Court.
Meanwhile, the Ndola Regional Immigration Office on March 24, 2023, apprehended 29 persons during a clean-up operation conducted in Ndola’s Twapia, Lubuto, Masala, and Pamodzi areas.
Mr Nshinka said those arrested were 15 Tanzanians, ten Congolese, and four Somalis.
He also said a Zambian was also nabbed for obstructing the Officers in the execution of duty.
The Lusaka and Ndola operations bring the number of persons apprehended for various immigration offences between 24 and 28 March 2023 to 136.
The Mpika Immigration Office secured the conviction of four Kenyan nationals of Somalian origin for failure to appear before the nearest Immigration Officer.
The Kenyans, together with a Zambian, were picked at Kachela Village by Police Officers following a tip-off from a concerned member of the public and later handed over to Immigration after failing to produce documentation legalizing their entry into Zambia.
They appeared before the Mpika Magistrate Court on March 28 2023, where they were each sentenced to pay a fine of K 20,000 or, in default, two years simple imprisonment.
In addition, the Zambian was charged with aiding and abetting illegal immigrants and his matter is still in Court.
This brings the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 24 and 28 March 2023 to 62.
During this period, the Department also removed 38 illegal immigrants of different nationalities from the country
