3 women nabbed trying to smuggle mealie meal to DR Congo

Three women have been arrested in Mufulira for allegedly trying to smuggle over 2000x25KG bags of mealie-meal to DR Congo.

Copperbelt Police Commanding officer Peace well Mweemba said that police received information from members of the public that unknown number of people had assembled at a certain house in Kombe Street, with unknown number of bags of mealie meal, about to smuggle it into the DR Congo.

Mr Mweemba said a follow-up was made by the officers to the said house where they found about 1200 x25 Kgs bags of mealie meal in Mataba and Olympic milling brands heaped in the garage.

He said another consignment of about 1200 was found loaded onto a Fuso fighter truck, which was found, parked inside the yard altogether 2400×25 Kg bags of mealie meal.

Mr Mweemba said the incident occurred on February 18, 2023 around 12:00 in Mufulira Town.

He identified the suspects in police custody as Hellen Chongo 41, Maureen Miyandwe 39, both of Zambia Township in Mokambo, and Vinet Mulenga 39, of Chitimukulu.

He said a docket has been opened, and mealie meal kept at the police, and investigations instituted.
