3 Mopani underground miners suffocated to death

Three miners at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) Mindola Shaft underground have been suffocated to death.

Both Copperbelt Deputy Police Chief Wamunyima Wamunyima and Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) President Joseph Chewe have conformed the development to The Independent Observer in an interview.

Mr Wamunyima said the four miners were refueling a loader at an underground depth of 1, 380 metres when suddenly there was an explosion.

He said the fourth employee managed to survive but the trio was suffocated to death.

Mr Wamunyima identified the victims as Tom Kamanga an Artisan of Wusakile, Kitwe, Bartholomew Mwamba an Electrician of Wusakile and Ray Mungo an Artisan of New Ndeke Township in Kitwe.

One miner Francis Mumba is battling for his life at Wusakile Mine Hospital after being involved in the same accident which happened at 1380 meter level B Section.
