Three people have been injured, while seven others have been arrested by police, after some Zambians clashed with Malawian, at a market in Chipangali district, Eastern province.
The incident happened yesterday, at the mobile market, popularly known as Kabwandire, in Mgubudu area of Chipangali.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Luckson Sakala said the confusion started after some traders from Chipata decided to remove some Malawians who were trading in Mgubudu area of chieftainess MKanda’s area.
Mr Sakala said the confusion ensued when Malawian traders went against the trade agreement that they made with their Zambian counterparts.
He said Malawians are supposed to trade in the area on Mondays, while Saturdays were reserved for Zambians.
Mr Sakala said the local people in Mgubudu area welcomed the Malawians but traders from Chipata were not pleased with the move taken by the Malawians.
He said out of the three injured persons one was seriously injured and is currently admitted to the local hospital in Mgubudu.
Mr Sakala has explained that the injured persons and those, who were arrested, are Zambians.
He said those that were arrested have since been charged with riotous behaviour.
