Zambia Police Service Commission has described as negligence the escape of the 22 suspected criminals from Lusaka’s Matero Police Station cells.
The suspects are alleged to have committed various offences ranging from murder, aggravated robbery and other minor crimes.
Only three have been recaptured.
Commission Chairperson Peter Machungwa said the officer who has since been detained in relation to the escape was not accompanied by any armed officers.
And Zambia Police Service Commission Deputy Commissioner Namakau Kabwiku has called on community members to work hand in hand with the police service.
