Twenty (20) were killed in Gender Based Violence (GBV) incidences while 583 children were sexually defiled during the second quarter of 2019.
This is a sad story that children are sexually defiled and abused inside their homes where they are supposed to seek refuge.
Latest statistics from Zambia Police shows that the country had recorded 20 GBV related murder cases.
Exposing male parents and guardians are the souring stats of GBV for the children who were sexually defiled totaling to 583.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said GBV cases have continued to rise with a number of cases being withdrawn by victims.
Ms Katongo said a total of 46 cases of indecent assault were recorded during the same period under review where 1,756 cases of Assault were also recorded countrywide.
“The country recorded a total of 6,139 GBV cases in the second quarter of 2019. This has shown an increase of 1.1 percent compared to 6,074 cases last year. There is need for collaboration to heighten the fight against the scourge.
“Some cases of GBV still remain unreported hence the need to enhance the support structure for it. About 145 cases of rape and 19 attempted rape cases were recorded during the period under review,” she said.
