Luapula Water and Sewerage Company (LPWSC) have embarked on a sanitation programme dubbed the city wide sanitation plan at a total cost of USD 150million.
Speaking during a presentation at the first national sanitation summit held under the theme ‘collective action towards sustainable sanitation and hygiene services for all’ at the Mulungushi conference centre, LpWSC Managing Director Kenneth Chense said goal of the citywide plan is to collect information that will offer safely managed sanitation services to all urban and peri urban areas in Mansa.
Presenting the citywide sanitation plan paper Mr Chense said the programme is aimed at achieving a complete cycle of disposing human excreta through all levels of the sanitation chain which include collection, emptying, transportation, treatment and deposal.
He said LpWSC will work with all stakeholders to improve access to safe managed and services in Mansa district.
Mr Chenses said that the plan is aimed at reducing the risk of contaminating the ground water and at the same time promoting the safety deposal and management of feacal sludge.
Mr Chense said the citywide sanitation plan will explore business opportunities that can be harnessed from the management of fecal and the provision of pipe water to all areas in Mansa hence providing opportunities for the private sector thereby create jobs.
Mr Chense added that the company’s strategic objective is to increase safely managed sanitation from the current 14 percent to 77 percent by 2023 adding that this can only be achieved by rehabilitating of collapsed sewerage pipes in urban areas and provide feacal sludge treatment facilities to cover all areas.
