15 pupils gassed in Ndola

Fifteen pupils at Masala Secondary school in Ndola have been gassed with an unknown chemical.

Acting Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Tresphord Kasala has confirmed that the pupils were gassed while at assembly and being addressed by School Headteacher Chafwa Mwewa yesterday.

Mr Kasala three juveniles have since been arrested in connection with the gassing of the pupils.

And Ndola District Education Board Secretary- DEBS, Patrick Kaonga has explained to ZANIS in a phone interview that some pupils, who were facing disciplinary action, allegedly rebelled and hired a gang from the township.

Mr. Kaonga said the hired gang armed with iron bars and the unknown chemical went to the school and managed to spray the chemical on the pupils who were at the assembly.

And , Copperbelt province Deputy Permanent Secretary Daniel Kamenga, who visited the pupils at the hospital described the incidence as ‘unfortunate’.

He praised Management at the hospital for swiftly attending to the pupils by ensuring that most of them were resuscitated.

Meanwhile, Ndola Teaching Hospital doctor Johnson Matolo said most of the pupils presented with heart palpitation and chest pains.

Dr. Matolo said after treatment and thorough observation, most of the pupils have been discharged except for two who are on oxygen therapy. ZANIS.
