124,000 MT maize purchased for Southern Province

Government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has so far purchased over 124,000 metric tonnes of maize grain from farmers in Southern Province.

And 75 thousand metric tonnes have so far been moved from satellite depots to the main holding depots in a bid to secure the maize following onset of the rains.

Southern Province minister Cornelius Mweetwa disclosed this when he flagged off another fleet of trucks to mop up the remaining 48 thousand metric tonnes.

This is in response to the directive given by vice President Mutale Nalumango during her visit to Mapatizya constituency in Zimba district two weeks ago.

The Minister has assured of government’s commitment to ensuring food security in the province as evidenced from the swift response to prevent maize grain from going to waste.

He has also thanked the defense forces, FRA and the Disaster management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for their commitment and logistical support to securing maize in the province.
