120 displaced by floods in Mambwe

More than 120 households have been displaced by floods in Malambo Constituency in Mambwe District in Eastern Province.

The floods come following the flooding of Lutembwe and Msandile streams in the district.

The floods have also left some maize fields and houses submerged in water.

And government has commenced the evacuation of affected families to safer places.

Eastern Province Minister Makebi Zulu who is also Malambo Member of Parliament has told The Independent Observer that Chiutika and Mphata schools have been designated as temporary emergency shelters.

Mr Zulu said government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU- has started the distribution of mealie-meal to the affected families.

He described the situation as devastating and has assured the affected people in the area of government’s support.
